“Steven Tyler is one of the giants of American music, who’s been influential for a whole generation of Rock ’n’ Roll fans around the world. Long May He Rock!”—Sir Paul McCartneyDoes the Noise in My Head Bother You? is the rock memoir to end all rock memoirs — the straight-up, no-holds-barred story of Grammy Award-winning, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and all around superstar legend Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith (and celebrity judge on American Idol). The rock and roll epic that is Tyler’s life begins with Tyler’s youth in the Bronx, tracing his early music career and influences, his legendary partnership with Joe Perry, the meteoric rise, fall, and rise of Aerosmith over the last three decades, their music, Tyler’s battles with substance abuse, his epic romantic life, his relationship with his four children (including actress Liv Tyler), life on the road and in the spotlight, the economics of the rock star business --and all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll that anyone could ask for.In Tyler’s own words: “I’ve been mythicized, Mick-icized, eulogized and fooligized, I’ve been Cole-Portered and farmer’s-daughtered, I’ve been Led Zepped and 12-stepped. I’m a rhyming fool and so cool that me, Fritz the Cat, and Mohair Sam are the baddest cats that am. I have so many outrageous stories, too many, and I’m gonna tell ’em all. All the unexpurgated, brain-jangling tales of debauchery, sex & drugs, transcendence & chemical dependence you will ever want to hear. And this is not just my take, this is the unbridled truth, the in-your-face, up-close and prodigious tale of Steven Tyler straight from the horse’s lips.”
I'm writing this review because at this point I'm about 2/3 of the way through Steven Tyler's memoir, and I'm not only hooked, I think this may be one of the best--if not the very best--book I've ever had the pleasure of reading in my entire life. Part of the reason it seems necessary to write this review is to try to balance out the other bad reviews that have been given and to make sure that others don't miss out on a great book because of some questionable reviews. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. That being said, it should be obvious that I don't agree with people who say this book is anything but absolutely top-notch.The long and the short of it is, if you like Aerosmith even a LITTLE bit, you'll likely love this book. I, myself, am a fan of only a few Aerosmith songs, and I've never seen American Idol, so I'm basing my review entirely upon what I've read so far. In this book, here's what you're going to get for your money: A straight-forward, honest, in your face, over-the-top, true-to-life, in-living-color recap of a rock star's life that took over 60 years to create, almost 40 of those in one of the biggest, wildest, most phenominal rock bands ever to string together a series of notes and call it music. Steven Tyler tells it exactly as it is, makes no apologies (although he does admit that some of his actions were mistakes, but that he learned from them), and is true to himself and his own personality.Other reviewers said that they were shocked by the excessive use of profanity. All I can say is hello, he's a ROCK STAR! If you've ever listened to an Aerosmith song, read the lyrics, or god forbid, listened to him speak at all, this is how he talks, and it should be expected. When reading about one of the world's most iconic ROCK musicians, one should expect shocking, rocking, and at least a little bit of the profane. If you don't, then I don't know why not. You're not reading about the life of Mr. Rogers, or Walt Disney--this is the lead singer of Aerosmith. Basically what I'm saying is, if you want something rated "G", then go watch the Wonderful World of Disney, because this book is not for you. For anyone who wants to hear about an amazing, incredible, fantastic life that most of us can only dream about and will never get to experience, now is your chance to hear all about it first hand, from the man who lived it.This work is penned in precisely the same manner as that in which Steven Tyler himself speaks and thinks. It's his life, told his way, on his terms, and expect nothing less than the best, in this regard. People say that he should have improved his grammar and that more should have been done to refine the book. I say if this had been done, it wouldn't be Steven Tyler telling about his life any longer; it would be a style and grammar manual fit for high school English class. I'm happy that he didn't sell out and have someone critique his every sentence to death. The closest thing that I can get to knowing him personally is to learn about him through the events of his life, and those events should be told how he chooses, profanity and all.My title says what I think of this book and how truly spectacular I think it is. I'm confident that anyone who reads this with an open mind and wishes to learn about a musical legend that can never be topped would find this work nothing short of life-changing. There have been times while reading when it has made me laugh so hard I couldn't breath, and within a few sentences I was almost brought to tears because of the sheer intensity with which Steven Tyler infuses each and every page. Although the book does contain profanity, sex, drugs, and all those tabboo subjects, it also shows how one person who has the courage, wit, and sass to follow a dream wherever it leads can do amazing things. What better lesson for each of us to learn in life, and who better to teach us than someone who has done it all, seen it all, and lived to tell it. Do yourself a favor and read this book cover to cover. At the very least you'll get a chuckle, a "wow" moment, or perhaps a moment of tears. For any or all of these reasons, it's worth a read. I can't recommend it enough!
